I, myself, am growing tired of hearing about dirty tricks, attacks, and purposely misleading the vote among some Republican campaigns. Considering that he is running on a religious platform, Huckabee should be above this unbiblical behavior, but I see his campaign/supporters are one of the biggest violators.
Thompson Camp Reports "Smear" Fliers Misleading Record
ABC's Christine Byun reports:
They say fliers with misleading information about the former Tennessee senator’s abortion record were placed on parked cars at their event venue last night (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/01/thompson-lets-g.html). The fliers insinuate Thompson voted for funding for abortions through a bill that supported Planned Parenthood. Thompson –- who has received the endorsement of national anti-abortion organization National Right to Life –- did vote for the bill in question, H.R. 3061. However, the bill specifically states that it does not include federal funding for abortions and does not mention Planned Parenthood. The flier quotes Scripture –- Proverbs 31:8 –- and includes a picture of the former Senator. [read more]

I'm tired of it too. I feel betrayed by the Huckabee campaign as someone who once considered supporting his bid for the Presidency. I feel even more betrayed as I to am a Southern Baptist. As a minister, Governor Huckabee's public actions should be above reproach. Yes, we are all sinners and all make mistakes. But as a Christian we are supposed to be beacons for Christ and our actions and deeds should contribute to winning the lost. If the Governor, through his own deeds or his surrogates, are deceitful and make gains through evil methods, then they are doing an injustice to the people he is trying to represent and the church he already does. Instead of blindly supporting him because he is a minister, I expect more from him. I wish his supporters would do the same. South Carolinians and the American people deserve better, and so do Baptists.
Thank you for your thoughts. I am relieved that others feel the same about expectations of Republican candidates and those representing Christ. And we do deserve better.
That really is despicable.
Especially since we all know what the Bible teaches about how we are to treat our neighbors and brothers and sisters in Christ.
I have noticed that many Evangelicals are very holier than thou and biased against all other religions.
I was raised in a protestant home and was taught to be very prejudiced against Catholics, and Baptists and was treated the same by Baptists and Jehovah witnesses.
Since moving out of my parents home and meeting and marrying my husband I have been able to overcome my prejudice to the point that after much prayer, research and study I converted to Catholicism and have never felt more strong and at home in my faith ever since.
I was was taught my whole life that Catholics hate Christians and look down upon them and their beliefs. Since going to college and living my own life I began to see that Protestants, beginning with myself, were blind to the truth. We have been handed down a prejudice from a break in the Church centuries ago that we no longer even understood. We were blindly biased and did not even know the real reasons why.
Because I questioned many things in my protestant church I was outcast and began to look at things from a realistic view. I myself began to learn the truth about the things I had been taught and did not judge when I met my husband. Imagine the life, and my children, I would have lost out on had I remained in the mire of religious prejudice! I sure can't and would not want to.
Huckabee, his supporters and other campaigns need to stop the religious slander and stop claiming religion and truly live it.
Huck had fliers about him placed on cars parked in church lots in SC. Who is responsible for that?
To blame Huckabee supporters, like you did in your article, with no actual proof is just not the right thing to do.
You should not mention bible quotes when you are bearing false witness against people.
That is wrong...............
I am aware of the fliers placed against Huckabee. As Fox reported it they dealt with his actual stands on the issues and were not the fabricated lies that were placed against Thompson. CNN and Fox both reported that Huckabee supporters were behind the fliers against Thompson and after considering the push polls bigoted attacks against Mormons and Catholics and strange comments left by Huckabee supporters all over the Internet I would say this fits their MO perfectly. So in no way did my wife bare false witness against anyone.
While I have the time I would like to point out that the reason Huckabee lost people like me, people who were with him from the beginning, is because of his dirty, under handed attacks, his hard left turn on major issues, and his cozying up to an extremist element in the Evangelical movement that sees nothing wrong with attacking anyone who is different than themselves. The truth is Gov. Huckabee could have won the nomination, he blew it for himself and he has no one to blame but himself.
DR, You said it exactly right. I agree with you all the way.
Thanks.
You do know that McCain/Feingold makes it ILLEGAL for Huckabee (or his campaign) to contact this (or any) 527 that is responsible for most of this crap, right?
Jeremy,
You are one of the smartest men I know so I know that you know this; all that happens is the candidate says that something has to be done about a particular opponent, there is a wink and a nod, and the push polls start. All without the candidate directly being linked to it. Very convenient for any politician that benefits from them, huh?
Governor Huckabee has run one of the dirtiest campaigns I have seen. He sits idly back and lets various supporters attack other candidates' religion, distort their records, he allows his staff to threaten physical harm on other candidates and he refuses to respond to legitimate questions on issues and his record. He reminds me of a Republican version of Clinton. The only difference is he seems to keep his pants on.
